Cars to get LED Displays

A prototype of a new type of Heads-Up Display (HUD) using LED technology was unveiled at a trade show held by Oki Digital Imaging Corp (ODI).

The LED display itself is no more than 1.1 inches in size and it is able to take advantage of an ODI bonding technique which does not require adhesive or wire bonding, allowing for the unit to take up far less space.

Schoolchildren living in rural Africa will soon receive LED lights as part of a literacy scheme.Launched by Royal Philips Electronics and the Dutch government, the initiative aims to help schoolchildren complete their homework after nightfall.Figures from the company indicate that 500 million people on the continent do not have access to electricity and this can prevent children from reading.

Digital signs provide directions

Students at a US college can now navigate their way around the campus thanks to the installation of digital signs.The interactive LED-based screens were recently installed in kiosks at St Cloud Technical College, Minnesota. Five kiosks at the campus received interactive software programmes which are integrated into digital screens and offer in-depth information such as maps of the area.

A US university library has been fitted with digital signs as part of a refurbishment project.The Wahlstrom Library at the University of Brideport, Connecticut, recently underwent a digital refurbishment which has seen the introduction of digital books, signs and boards.Students now have access to 80,000 journals and 50,000 books which are all electronically stored, according to the university.
